Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Statistics Calculator.

What is the difference between mean, median and mode?

The mean is the arithmetic average of all values, the median is the middle value once the data is sorted, and the mode is the value that appears most often. The median resists outliers better than the mean.

Why does the median resist outliers better than the mean?

Because the median depends only on the position of values, not their magnitude, so a single extreme value cannot drag it far. The mean is directly affected by every value's size, which is why skewed data like incomes is often reported by median.

What is standard deviation?

Standard deviation measures how spread out data is from the mean, calculated as σ = √(Σ(x−x̄)²/n). Deviations are squared so they do not cancel out and larger deviations weigh more; the square root returns the measure to the original units.
